June Newsletter It was a great day for our club, this past Tuesday, May 25! Our District Governor, Russell Duncan, presented with The Presidential Citation, an award given to a club for exemplary achievement in the four areas of service within Rotary. The Governor recognized our club, one of 17 clubs in our District of 43, to be honored. We were the first on his 17 stops throughout the District; and we are justifiably proud of this level of achievement. My thanks to the entire club for a wonderful year, filled with joyous endeavors and life-changing experiences in our Garner area, District, and around the world. A brief summary of the year’s activities and involvements… 1. We adopted as our singular fund raiser, the ‘gala bling’, which was quite successful; and we are at work on this year’s ‘gala ball’ at Anfesa’s in November. 2. We updated and adopted our Bylaws. 3. We reached our PolioPlus challenge of $3500 two years early. 4. We received our Rotary flag, identifying us as a 100% Paul Harris Club, while continuing our EREY, a 100% Sustaining Club. 5. We conducted a Rotary Against Drugs speech contest and the Four-Way Test speech contest, giving scholarships of $4000. 6/ We purchased a trailer/van (with Rotary logo) for storage of our materials and for use in parades. 7. We sent three students to RYLA ($750). 8. We gave the Luther Hodges Ethics Award to Mrs. Anna Hudson. 9. We distributed 10. We did ‘work detail’ for the Woman’s Club and the 11. We dedicated September as Teacher Appreciation Month, giving each teacher in the Garner area schools, a special recognition. 12. We held a ‘Shopping Spree’ for the residents at the 13. We purchased $1300 of books for the SCOR, second-grade reading level, focusing on books with ethnicity in mind. 14. We gave to several charities, totaling $4500 (Boys and Girls Home, Stop Hunger Now, Triangle Down Syndrome, YMCA, Haiti Relief). 15. Our public image was enhanced by the publication of our activities and projects in the local newspaper, twenty times. 16. We gave $500 to the Caroline Ball Family Foundation. 17. We had one member who graduated from the Rotary Leadership Institute. 18. We joined with the morning club and purchased Bibles for all graduating seniors who wanted one. ($1200) 19. We received the Presidential Citation as a club, indicating increased membership and exemplary completion of activities in the four areas of service. 20. Our BackPack operation will be the benefactor of funds raised at a parachute jump sponsored by Aversboro Coffee Shop. All of the endeavors and accomplishments could not have occurred without the full cooperation of our club members. As your President, I am extremely proud of you all, and am in debt to you for your support, commitment, and involvement in the life of Rotary. Let us finish the Rotary year with a flourish and a flash—as we gather at the Civitan Club for our exit experience with an Hawaiian Luau. It promises to be a great time; yet remembering, the best is still yet to be!
